There is a Lloyds scale of diesel quality where fuel rated an A is perfect and D is not suitable for use or ‘fit for purpose’.
It is important that you know the condition of your fuel. Although there are some ‘instant’ tests we always use and recommend testing at a laboratory. Where we can provide you with an independent report with our recommendations.

The traditional method of treating any microbial contamination in diesel was to use a biocide.
This would kill any microbes that it came into contact with, but it was highly toxic. You were left with dead sludge still on the bottom of the tank. This sludge would be very likely to contain live microbes that with fresh food (water)would grow again. Biocides are now banned in many European countries.
The other additives were surfactant (detergent) based ones, they increased the fuels lubricity in theory helping clean injectors.They also emulsify any water INTO the fuel, to be burnt away as steam.
There is a new breed of additive that breaks up the contamination (Sludge), protects the tank walls and clean injectors. Which is why we use and recommend FuelRight.
Using a combination of additives and polishing (filtering) we can turn D rated fuel back to an A rating. In severe cases we will open up tanks and physically enter and clean them.

If you have fuel in long term storage for what the Americans call ‘mission critical’ like standby generators, you need to put in place a fuel management plan. This will give you a regular process of testing and remediation to keep this fuel in A grade condition. The installation of automated Fuel Polishing units is part of a good fuel management plan.
